They came to a decadent America, stumbling toward insurrection. The Zebonites, beings from a distant star, had promised astounding medical and scientific advances in exchange for settling up a military stronghold in Florida’s Everglades. Excited by their promise, Joe Tanner is hired for the contact team, a small group of individuals who could gain access to and lead others into the Zebonite’s stronghold. But the Zebonites kept themselves shrouded in mystery, not revealing their natures, communicating only through the Zugs, mutated servants, and robotic bugs. They sought to instill a dread of them by punishing or killing those who opposed them. Moreover, fear grows that the Gi, enemies of the Zebonites, might discover Earth and attack it. Tanner learns that a group of military officials, rebellious politicians, and embittered scientists are plotting to destroy the Zebonites. Then Tanner is faced with a dreadful choice, whether to lead armed soldiers into the stronghold to destroy the Zebonites or to warn the aliens. Either choice could lead to the murder of the woman he loves and to a possible atomic retaliation by the Zebonites A tense, fast-paced novel leading to a stunning conclusion.
